A young teacher from the backwaters, Svetlana having come to a work seminar in St Petersburg, becomes acquainted with a geologist at an oil company, Fyodor, who falls in love with the naïve provincial girl. He foregoes the opportunity of going on an expedition and proposes to the girl and organizes a cosy family nest for her. It seems that life could become an unbroken “day of happiness”, but the luxurious mansion in time becomes a gilded cage for Svetlana. One day, strolling through St Petersburg, she gets to know a cultured paramedic, Berezkin. In love with his native city and something of a history buff, Berezkin turns their joint trip through St Petersburg into an entertaining excursion. Little by little, real feelings flare up between these young people.
